This is a continuation piece of my Omaha Beach research series. My last illustration depicted the R677 bunker of the German strongpoint WN72. Well, the R677 was one of two bunkers in that position. This is my depiction of the other major fortification in WN72...
The Sonderkonstruction Doppelschartenstand (Special Construction, Double Embrasure) was a unique German fortification on Omaha Beach. It had two embrasures that allowed its 5cm Kwk 38 L/42 gun to fire east or west along the beach. It also had a ring-stand position to the rear for mounting a French Renault turret armed with a Reibel machine gun (although this was never installed). Despite the Germans sporadically placing these SK's along the Normandy coast, particularly along Grandcamp-Maisy, this was a non-regulation design that did not follow standard German fortification specs.
Like the R677, the SK at WN72 was partially concealed by cobblestone to camouflage it.
All wartime photos of the SK were taken after D-Day once the Americans cleared a lot of debris away from the structure. So, this is my depiction of how the SK would have looked prior to D-Day. Parts of the adjacent nest WN73 are seen in the background on the right, atop the escarpment that eventually turns into Pointe de la Percée.
