A few months ago, historian and author James Gregory commissioned me to depict the central event of his new book 𝙐𝙣𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙮𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙜𝙩. 𝘼𝙡𝙫𝙞𝙣 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙞𝙭𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙣, and I was proud to do it. On the morning of October 8, 1918, within the Argonne Forest, seventeen American soldiers from the 82nd Division ambushed a German unit and captured more than 80 troops. While the Americans secured the prisoners, another German unit farther uphill attacked, resulting in 6 killed and 4 wounded. Alvin York, one of the Americans in the patrol, would later receive credit for all the actions during the skirmish, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor. The 16 other men, however, were never acknowledge for their part in the attack. Until now.
For years, James has been painstakingly researching this event, and he has unearthed a completely different story that will change history. In order to accurately depict this scene, I got early access to parts of James' book, and I highly recommend it to any history enthusiast. Thank you, Mike, for helping me accurately depict the uniforms, gear, and weapons. Thank you, James, for letting me be part of this landmark piece of research in WWI history!
