As an artist and WWII history nerd, one of my favorite gigs is doing photoshop mockups of video game screenshots for the YouTube channel The Frosty1, which covers historically inaccuracies in video games and movies. Do not confuse these with mods; these are screenshots from the game that have been altered in photoshop.
These are the mockups I did for our video on Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30. Because the game follows the 502nd PIR of the 101st Airborne in Normandy, I wanted to change the generic German enemies to represent some of the actual units they actually faced...
The first enemies encountered during the drop in Normandy are "Osttruppen" which look like standard German Heer infantry. I changed these to represent either Russian or Ukrainian troops of Ost-Bataillon 795; weathered tunic from the Eastern Front, Osttruppen breast insignia instead of the standard German Eagle, Osttruppen shoulder straps with red piping, silver Osttruppen collar insignia, Russian Liberation Army sleeve patch, less combat equipment, and Soviet PPSH-41 instead of a German MP40. Second, I also wanted to represent the Georgian volunteers of Ost-Battallion 795 that were in the area of the American drop zones. I gave them the Georgian volunteer sleeve patch, Osttruppen shoulder straps, 'ethnic' collar insignia with pink piping of Georgian troops, one with 'oatmeal' drillich trousers common along the coast of Normandy, chicken wire on the helmets, slightly darker complexion, and one with a mustache.
The next enemies that needed an accuracy makeover were the German Paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger) who all wear dark gray FJ helmets, have dark gray collars, use an abundance of FG42's, and wear tan-colored jump smocks. I changed the jump smocks to be more accurate to Luftwaffe splintertarnmuster (more muted green, less tan) and gave one a solid green one (seen a lot in Normandy). I changed the collars of their tunics to be the proper feldblau color of Luftwaffe uniforms. Their belt buckles were changed from the standard Heer ones to correct Luftwaffe ones. Since the FG42 was not super common in Normandy, 1944, I changed the NCO's gun to an MP40. The NCO's helmet was given an improvised camo paint job, and instead of another FJ helmet, the other trooper's helmet was changed to a standard one since these were given to many Fallschirmjäger at this stage of the war.
